Andrea DeFelice works in a range of media including including a series of mechanized light paintings and objects, live data-driven video, slide projection, and works on paper. Her most recent works are responses to interests in how information is hidden and revealed, edited and leaked, perceived, redacted, and reformed. They depict various impressions on place, instances, and are set to re-inform the way we think about data as we receive it today through both traditional and alternative methods. The artist incorporates ultraviolet light, mechanical motion, acoustics from objects, photography, and repetitive visuals to reference the interplay between physical vs. digitally-generated realities.
Her work references different concepts and concerns over what makes information considered valid, and even how new technologies affect they way we communicate. Whether sought out, concealed, or flowing at you from incontinent feeds, the ways we received information shape our perceptions of what it defines.
DeFelice was born in New York and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Her work has shown in various forms as performances, installation, screenings, and in part of collaborative projects. Exhibition venues include The Austrian Cultural Forum, The Invisible Dog Art Center, Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center, Periferic 8 Biennial for Contemporary Art in Iași, Romania, Contemporary Art Center in Thessaloniki, Greece, and Hafnarborg in Hafnarfjördur, Iceland. She's participated in several artist residencies in Europe and in the US, and currently teaches digital art and media studies at Pratt Institute and CUNY.
