Transposition: Contemporary Hairwork.
Using the medium of human hair, Spencer Merolla revisits the Victorian practice of sentimental hairwork in a fresh and contemporary way. The work plays with the tension between sincerity and emotional performance, imagining a contemporary practice in which moderns might socially engage with death and mourning. The dissonance of the craft, when transposed onto the emotional and aesthetic landscape of our times, draws attention to the ever-shifting boundaries of permitted public display.
Spencer's work is on view from March 4th - 27th, 2015 at Sweet Lorraine Gallery.
